The first Boston Marathon was run in 1897. It was won by John J. McDermott of the United States in a time of 2:55:10, which was, of course, the first course record. Women did not run in that first Boston Marathon and were not officially sanctioned as participants until 1972.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, played goalie for the amateur Portsmouth association football club, which would eventually become the Portsmouth professional team that won the FA cup in 2008.
